Episode 1: The Unexpected Turn

For most of my life, I had never considered love as a priority. My early years had been consumed by my academic pursuits and building a career that would lead me across the world. I was determined to make a mark in the world of international diplomacy. I had spent years immersed in my postgraduate studies and then my work with the United Nations. These were the things that motivated me, that defined me. They gave my life purpose. The thought of love—let alone marriage—seemed like an afterthought, an unnecessary distraction. I was focused, goal-oriented, and clear on the path I had chosen for myself.
But, as time passed, something began to shift.

I had always traveled—so often, in fact, that I had become accustomed to being alone in foreign countries, surrounded by people I didn’t know, engaging in conversations that felt temporary and fleeting. But despite the bustle, despite the diplomacy, despite all the professional recognition I was receiving, I started to realize something I hadn’t expected. I was lonely. The moments when I could stand still and truly be myself felt sparse. My work, my travels, my accolades—none of it was enough to fill the void I didn’t even know existed. I yearned for something deeper, something more intimate. I wanted a companion, someone to share not just my successes but my quiet moments too.
I met Emmanuel in 2009, in Chad, a country I never thought would play such a pivotal role in my life. He was a kind, grounded man, and we had kept a loose friendship over the years. We didn’t speak often, but when we did, it was easy—comfortable, even. It wasn’t a relationship I ever thought about much, though. I was too busy. Life was demanding, and I had no time for distractions.

Fast forward to 2015. I found myself in Paris, a city that was meant to be a retreat, a break between my commitments. I had planned to spend the weekend with a girlfriend, but at the last minute, she had to cancel. Once again, I was alone. I could have easily drowned myself in the allure of Paris—the museums, the cafes, the endless bustle of the city. But there was something missing. The city felt empty without someone to share it with, without a sense of connection. And then, Emmanuel—now in Po (I didn’t even know how to spell Pau at the time)—reached out. He had mentioned before that he would be around, but I had dismissed the idea of visiting him. I was just passing through, after all. I hadn’t expected this to go anywhere, nor was I looking for anything more than a pleasant chat.

But then, after a moment of reflection, something in me shifted. I thought, why not? It’s just one weekend, one chance to catch up with an old friend. It’s not like I was risking much. I decided to take the leap. I told myself I’d be cautious, keep my distance, and enjoy his company for the weekend. Nothing more.
The weekend was peaceful—pleasant in a way that surprised me. It was easy. We spent time talking, walking, sharing stories from years past. There was no rush, no pressure. We laughed, we connected, and for the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel alone. It was calm. It was beautiful.

On the way to the airport, as I said my goodbyes, Emmanuel, true to his nature, was respectful and kind. He didn’t try to hug me, as if respecting some invisible boundary. It was a gesture that stuck with me, a sign of his modesty, his integrity. And then, as I got into the taxi to head to the airport, I received a message from him: “In another life, possibly.”

I sat there, reading those words over and over. There was something so final, so fatalistic about it. It rattled me, more than I cared to admit. Why did he say that? Was he letting me go? Had I missed something? I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had to do something more, that this was not just a fleeting connection but something deeper that needed to be explored. The message, instead of closing the door, had opened it wider for me, urging me to step forward and see what lay beyond.

And so, I did what I had always done in my life—when faced with uncertainty, I moved forward. I decided to try, to push past the doubts, to explore this unexpected possibility. I didn’t know where it would lead, but I knew one thing for sure: something was shifting in me, and I wasn’t going to let it slip away this time.

That was the moment everything began to change. I was no longer just a diplomat, a traveler, a woman lost in her career. I was starting to become something else—a woman ready to open her heart, to take a chance on love, and to embrace the unexpected turns life had in store for me. And little did I know, that was just the beginning of a much bigger journey ahead.

Motherhood profoundly reshapes life in both expected and unexpected ways, influencing nearly every aspect of a person's identity, priorities, and relationships. Here’s how.

Motherhood is a transformative experience that reshapes nearly every aspect of life. From shifting priorities to evolving identities, the journey into parenthood brings both expected and unexpected changes—some beautiful, others deeply challenging. Here’s how motherhood can profoundly impact your life:

Expected Changes

Your Priorities Are Revolutionized

Motherhood naturally pushes your child’s needs to the forefront. Personal ambitions, hobbies, and even career goals may take a back seat as life begins to revolve around nurturing and securing your child’s future.

Emotional Shifts

Many parents experience a surge in emotional depth. Feelings of empathy and resilience grow stronger, and a profound sense of purpose often emerges from guiding and caring for a new life.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Time and routines are restructured to meet your child’s needs—feeding schedules, nap times, school runs, and more. Social life often becomes centered around family activities and responsibilities.

Physical Transformations

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can permanently alter the body. Health priorities may shift, focusing more on recovery, strength, and maintaining energy to keep up with parenting demands.

Unexpected Changes

An Evolving Identity

Motherhood can bring a sense of loss for your former self, while also sparking self-discovery. You may uncover hidden strengths or passions you never knew existed. It’s a constant balancing act between hope and self-doubt, and a desire to become the best version of yourself.

Shifts in Relationships

Friendships might change, especially with those who don’t share the same responsibilities. Within a couple, co-parenting can introduce new stressors, but also deepen emotional bonds as you navigate challenges together.

Mental Health Realities

Despite the joy it can bring, motherhood also carries the risk of emotional strain—stress, anxiety, postpartum depression, and isolation are more common than we acknowledge. There may be moments of guilt, helplessness, and a deep yearning for both emotional and practical support.

Rediscovering Strength

Each day tests your patience, creativity, and resilience. Over time, these qualities are reinforced. The sense of fulfillment from witnessing your child’s growth can make the sacrifices feel worthwhile.

A New Lens on Life

Children see the world with fresh eyes—and through them, you might rediscover wonder in everyday moments. You may also become more attuned to the state of the world and your role in shaping a better future for the next generation.

Cultural and Social Influences

Motherhood is not a one-size-fits-all experience. Cultural expectations, access to resources, family dynamics, and work obligations—especially for mothers who travel or live far from family—can greatly shape how motherhood unfolds. For working mothers, balancing a career and caregiving often requires immense adaptability and strength.

—

In Essence…

Motherhood brings change—some expected, many surprising. It is a journey of deep personal growth, transformation, and resilience. The woman you were before may evolve, but what emerges is someone equipped with a new kind of power: the adaptability to face life’s challenges with love, purpose, and courage.

The idea of a "perfect mother" is often a myth, but a working woman can absolutely be a *good* or even *exceptional* mother. The “concept of perfection” in motherhood varies based on cultural, personal, and societal expectations. What truly matters is a mother’s love, commitment, and ability to balance her roles in a way that works for her family and herself.

Why Working Women Can Be Great Mothers

Role Modeling

Working mothers demonstrate independence, responsibility, and ambition, setting a strong example for their children.

Children learn that women can excel in multiple roles, encouraging them to value equality and resilience.

Quality of Time

Studies show that the quality of interactions with children is more important than the quantity.

Working mothers often prioritize meaningful activities during family time or one-on-one time, fostering deep bonds.

Financial Stability

A working mother often contributes to a household’s financial security, enabling access to better resources like education, healthcare, and extracurricular activities.

Emotional Fulfillment

Pursuing a career can bring personal satisfaction and a sense of purpose, which positively impacts emotional well-being.

A fulfilled mother is better equipped to provide emotional support and stability for her children.

Challenges and How to Overcome Them

Balancing Time

Challenge: Juggling work responsibilities and family needs can be overwhelming.

Solution: Create schedules, delegate tasks, and prioritize quality family time. Utilize tools like meal planning or shared family calendars.

Mom Guilt

Challenge: Many working mothers feel guilty about spending less time with their children.

Solution: Focus on your strengths as a mother. Remember that providing for your child emotionally and financially is a form of care.

Work-Life Balance

Challenge: Boundaries between work and family life can be blurred – and it is hard to feel completely comfortable.

Solution: Set clear boundaries, advocate for flexible work arrangements, and unplug during family time. Stay away from screens and telephones as much as possible when around your kids.

Childcare Dependence

Challenge: Relying on childcare services can make some mothers feel less involved.

Solution: Choose trusted caregivers and maintain open communication about your child’s progress and needs.

What Makes a Good Mother (Working or Not)

Unconditional Love: Showing affection and being emotionally present for your child.

Guidance: Teaching values, discipline, and decision-making.

Support: Encouraging your child’s dreams and helping them overcome challenges.

Self-Care: Taking care of your own mental and physical health to ensure you’re at your best.

Key Takeaways

Perfection isn’t the Goal: There’s no one-size-fits-all definition of a perfect mother. Being attentive, loving, and supportive is more than enough.

Your Child’s Perspective: Children value the love, guidance, and stability their parents provide, not perfection.

Society is Changing: With flexible work arrangements and evolving cultural norms, working mothers are increasingly able to balance both roles effectively.

In essence, a working mother can excel in her parenting journey by embracing her unique strengths, seeking support and guidance when needed, and being intentional in her love and care for her child.

Becoming a single mother by choice is a deeply personal choice that comes with unique rewards and challenges. It’s essential to weigh the pros and cons carefully, considering your emotional, professional, financial, and social circumstances.

Pros of Becoming a Single Mother by Choice

Autonomy

You have complete control over parenting decisions without needing to compromise with a partner.

You can structure your family life based on your values and priorities.

Focused Bond with Your Child

A strong, direct relationship may develop because the parenting dynamic is solely between you and your child.

Empowerment

Taking control of your life and building a family on your terms can be deeply empowering.

You set an example of independence and intentionality for your child.

Reduced Conflict

Without a co-parent, you avoid potential disagreements about parenting styles, finances, or household responsibilities.

Community Support Options

There’s growing recognition and acceptance of single mothers by choice, with support groups, resources, and networks available to provide advice and camaraderie.

Cons of Becoming a Single Mother by Choice

Financial Responsibility

You are solely responsible for the costs of raising a child, from basic needs to education and beyond.

Planning for emergencies, like job loss or health issues, or solitude, is more critical.

Emotional and Physical Demands

Parenting can be exhausting, and without a partner to share the load, you might feel overwhelmed or burnt out.

Balancing work, parenting, and personal well-being can be challenging.

Social Stigma

While societal attitudes are evolving, some people may still question or judge your decision.

Explaining your choice to family, friends, or your child as they grow older may require thought and preparation.

Limited Personal Time

Without a co-parent, you may have less time for self-care, hobbies, or socializing.

Finding reliable childcare for work or personal breaks becomes crucial.

Impact on the Child

Your child may have questions about their other biological parent or how their family structure differs from peers’.

They might feel the absence of a second parent, though this depends on how the situation is framed and supported.

Key Considerations

Financial Preparedness

Do you have a stable income and a financial safety net?

Have you considered long-term costs, like education and health care?

Support System

Do you have friends, family, or a community to provide emotional, logistical, or practical support?

Are there trusted people who can step in during emergencies?

Emotional Readiness

Are you prepared for the emotional highs and lows of parenting alone?

Do you feel confident in managing stress and maintaining resilience?

Parenting Plan

Have you thought about how to address questions your child might have about their family structure?

Do you have a clear vision for balancing parenting and personal goals?

Making the Decision

If becoming a single mother by choice aligns with your values and you feel prepared, it can be a deeply fulfilling path. However, seeking advice from counselors, financial planners, or other single parents by choice can help clarify your decision. Building a robust plan and support network will empower you to navigate the journey successfully.
